How to Lock In Mentally and Finish 2026 Strong

How to Lock In Mentally and Finish 2026 Strong

My workday does not happen in one long block. It happens in pieces. Real work, then playtime with my toddler, then back to work, then back to my toddler again. For a long time I thought that meant I could never really focus. I was wrong.

So here is how to lock in mentally, in short: pick 1 goal, decide exactly when and where you will work on it, remove the 1 thing that pulls you away, and protect short focus blocks until they become a habit. Locking in is a setup you build, and you can build it today.

If you have seen "locked in" all over TikTok and Instagram lately, you are not imagining it. It is one of the biggest mindset phrases of the year. Google Trends shows searches for "locked in" staying high and kept rising from July into October. Here is how I actually do it as a founder and mother of 3 running 3 companies with AI, and how you can start today.

What does "lock in" mean?

"Lock in" means going into full focus mode on something that matters. Phone down. Distractions out. Excuses quiet. You stop talking about the goal and start moving toward it.

It sounds intense, but it is really simple. A locked in woman is not busier than everyone else. She is clearer. She knows the 1 thing she is working on, and she knows what she is saying no to.

That second part is the secret. Most of us do not lack motivation. We lack a decision.

Why it is so hard to lock in right now

Let's be honest about what we are up against.

  • Too many open loops. Unread texts, half finished projects, 14 tabs open. Every loop pulls a little of your attention.
  • Goals that are too big. "Grow my business" is a wish. "Send 10 pitch emails by Friday" is a plan.
  • Waiting to feel ready. Motivation shows up after you start, not before.
  • No protected time. If your focus time is not on the calendar, it belongs to everyone else.

None of these mean something is wrong with you. They mean your setup needs work. And setups can be fixed.

How to lock in mentally in 5 steps

!The 5 step lock in setup: pick 1 goal, write an if-then plan, cut 1 distraction, work in short blocks, and let AI help. 73 days left in 2026 compared with 66 days to build a habit.

Step 1: Pick 1 lock in goal

Not 5. One. Ask yourself: "If I only moved 1 thing forward before December 31, what would change my life the most?"

There are about 73 days left in 2026 after today. That is roughly 10 weeks. Ten focused weeks is more than enough time to finish a big project, launch something small, or build a habit that carries into next year.

Write the goal in 1 sentence and make it measurable. "Finish my product page and get 50 people on the waitlist" works. "Get my life together" does not. Wishing is not a plan, which is the part I wrote about in the truth about manifesting 3 companies.

Step 2: Write an if-then plan

This is the step most people skip, and it is the one with the most science behind it.

An if-then plan sounds like this: "If it is 6:00 AM on a weekday, then I open my laptop and write for 30 minutes before I check my phone."

Here is the surprising part. Researchers Peter Gollwitzer and Paschal Sheeran reviewed 94 studies on these simple if-then plans. They found a medium to large boost in reaching goals compared to just setting the goal. One sentence. A real, measurable difference.

Why does it work? Because you make the decision once, ahead of time. When 6:00 AM arrives, there is nothing left to decide. You just follow the plan.

Write 2 or 3 of these for your week:

  • If it is ______ (time) at ______ (place), then I will ______.
  • If I feel the urge to scroll, then I will ______.
  • If my plan gets interrupted, then I will ______.

That last one matters. Life will interrupt you. A locked in woman plans for that too.

Step 3: Remove the 1 biggest distraction

You do not need a perfect environment. You need to remove the 1 thing that steals the most focus.

For most of us, it is the phone. Put it in another room during your focus block. Turn on a focus mode. Log out of the app that always pulls you in.

For a lot of founders, it is messages. Try turning notifications off during your block and answering everything in 1 batch later. Almost nothing in your inbox needs you in the next 45 minutes.

Step 4: Work in short, protected blocks

You do not need 8 hours. You need blocks you actually protect.

My day already runs in short pieces, so I treat each piece as a focus block. If you are a mom, a full time employee building a side business, or anyone with a full life, short blocks are your best friend. They fit in the cracks of a real day.

Here is a simple way to plan your week:

| Day | Focus block | What I protect it from | |---|---|---| | Monday | 45 minutes on my 1 goal | Email and messages | | Tuesday | 30 minutes, plus a 10 minute review | Social media | | Wednesday | 45 minutes on my 1 goal | Meetings, if I can move them | | Thursday | 30 minutes on my 1 goal | My phone, in another room | | Friday | 20 minute weekly review | Guilt about what did not get done |

The Friday review is where the magic happens. Ask: What moved? What got in the way? What is my if-then plan for next week?

Step 5: Let AI hold the line for you

This is where I am different from most mindset advice. I use AI every single day to run my businesses, and it is one of my best tools for staying locked in.

AI does not get tired. It does not forget your goal. And it will tell you the truth when you are drifting, if you ask it to.

Here is a prompt to plan your lock in week. Copy it into ChatGPT or Claude:

You are my focus coach. My 1 goal for the next 10 weeks is: [your goal].
My available focus time this week is: [days and times].
My biggest distraction is: [distraction].
Build me a 7 day lock in plan with 1 small task per day, 3 if-then plans
for my week, and 1 question to ask myself every Friday.
Keep it simple and realistic for a busy woman.

Is locking in the same as hustle culture?

No. And this matters.

Hustle culture says work more, sleep less, prove yourself. Locking in says work on the right thing, with your full attention, for a set amount of time. Then stop.

Locking in actually protects your rest. When you know you gave your 1 goal a real 45 minutes, you can close the laptop and be fully present with your family, at the gym, or at dinner. No guilt. No half attention. If you want the real picture of building with a full life, read what nobody tells you about going from 0 to 3 companies.

The gym taught me this. You train hard, you leave, and you go live your life. Focus works the same way.

How long does it take to lock in?

You can lock in for 1 block today. Building it into a habit takes longer.

A well known study from University College London found it took people an average of 66 days to make a new daily habit feel automatic, with a wide range from person to person. Look at that number next to the calendar: 66 days fits inside what is left of this year.

So if you start this week, you could finish 2026 with a habit that runs on its own. That is a real head start on next year.
